The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has dismissed Olusegun Obasanjo’s endorsement of Peter Obi, describing it as “worthless”.
Recall that Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday endorsed the Labour Party standard bearer, Peter Obi, saying he had an edge over other presidential candidates in terms of knowledge, discipline, vitality, and character.
Meanwhile, in a statement by its Director of Media & Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, the PCC said though it respects the right of Mr Obasanjo to support and endorse any candidate of his choice in any election, his endorsement of Mr Obi is worthless.
“We make bold to say that our party and candidate, Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not lose sleep over Obasanjo’s move, as Obasanjo is notorious for always opposing progressive political forces, as he did against MKO Abiola in 1993.
“The endorsement is actually worthless because the former President does not possess any political goodwill or leverage anywhere in Nigeria to make anyone win a Councillorship election let alone win a Presidential election. He is a political paperweight,” Article continues after this Ads
Mr Onanuga said.
Although it is Mr Obi that has secured Mr Obasanjo’s support, other candidates including Mr Tinubu had also sought the support of the former president.
Mr Tinubu had in August last year visited Mr Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, as part of the consultations to actualise his ambition.
Mr Obasanjo’s support does not guarantee any candidate victory in a presidential election but he is considered one of the most influential Nigerians alive.
In 2019, he supported his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, against incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. Mr Buhari won that election.
However, before then, the candidates Mr Obasanjo supported in the presidential elections in 2007, 2011 and 2015 all emerged victorious.
